a school (is a school, is a zine)

with students from the Adolf Fredriks musikklasser and educator Ted Pettersson

Teachers are often confined to a lesson plan, grading criteria and other institutionalised methods that limit their ability to improvise and open up the curriculum. Together with students and in collaboration with educators and artists we want to challenge some of these restraints in formal education and play with alternatives to them.

a school (is a school, is a zine) is a collective and alternative curriculum proposed by over sixty students from Adolf Fredriks musikklasser. The zine collects all the tricks, opinions, games, recipes, feelings, advice, complains, praises, tests, notes and music scores that the students could think of during a series of workshops with School in Common and educator Ted Petersson that took place between October 2018 and April 2019.

The project started with filling in the gaps in a school (is a school, is a ___) on a long sheet of paper with tentative answers and suggestions. We learned from bell hooks that any radical pedagogy must insist that everyone's presence is acknowledged. With a simple gesture of taking student's considerations as a starting point, we envisioned the classroom as a community of learners in which everyone influences the classroom dynamics.

During the exhibition at Lava Library,  that took place between 9th of June to 7th of July 2019, School in Common presented the zine alongside with lists, notes, maps and eight meters worth of material from our workshops filled with thoughts and feelings on schooling, classroom, and study. Visitors of the exhibition were encouraged to help us finish the last meters of paper by writing down their own proposals.
